Fitting a folding side ladder on a Freewalker — what I checked before ordering

Figured I'd share this since I went back and forth on whether a folding side ladder was worth adding. The reason was simple: once you put anything on the roof, a tent, storage boxes, even recovery boards, climbing up through the door frame gets old fast, and I didn't want to be stepping over seats.

First thing I ruled out was a universal ladder. The Freewalker has factory-reserved mounting points, and a vehicle-specific ladder mounts straight to those without drilling. That alone was a deciding factor, because I wasn't going to put new holes in the body for an accessory. If anyone is looking at universal options, check how they actually attach before anything else.

The points I compared:

• Locks: two independent locks forming a dual anti-drop setup. After closing, the fitting gap is a uniform one-finger width, which is an easy thing to check on delivery.

• Contact points: soft rubber gaskets between the ladder and the body, so there is no metal-on-paint contact and no rattle while driving.

• Feel: opening, closing and climbing should be smooth with no jamming. I specifically wanted something I could operate on my own.

• Materials: anti-corrosion treatment on the metal parts mattered, because I didn't want the hinges seizing with rust after a wet season.

The test figures I asked for were 150kg load bearing, 800-hour weather aging, 5000 open/close cycles and a 60000km road test. I treated these as the comparison baseline rather than the marketing wording; if a seller can't tell you what was actually tested, that pretty much answers itself.

What I'd tell anyone considering one: decide based on mounting, drill-free or not, the dual locks, gasket fit and documented tests, in that order. It folds flat against the vehicle for city driving, so it doesn't sit awkwardly off the side.
